About Industrial Electric Mfg.

For over half a century, IEM has delivered innovative electrical distribution products to meet the escalating needs of growth industries. Based in the heart of Silicon Valley, IEM has been solving power distribution challenges for Hewlett-Packard, Apple, and dozens of

high-tech pioneers since their startup days. These companies recognized that IEM products were on par with those offered by multinationals, and that a faster, more flexible manufacturing system could provide the electrical equipment they needed in time to meet their demanding expansion requirements.

Starting in a barn on a family ranch in Fremont, CA, IEM grew alongside Silicon Valley, moving to a 12,000-square-foot facility in 1957, expanding to 70,000 square feet in 1980, then moving to a new, state-of-the-art 105,000-square-foot facility in 2003, and further expanding to 135,000 square feet in 2015.

IEM engineers pioneered the development and deployment of fully integrated CAD and manufacturing systems, beginning in 1979 with the first CAD/CAM system for electrical equipment metal fabrication. In 1984, the company designed and built its own vacuum circuit breaker, pioneered the use of vacuum breakers on 21kV systems, and became the first to design a 3000-amp freestanding vacuum breaker for capacitor switching by utilities. In the late 1980s, IEM developed metering switchboards that were distributed by one of the largest electrical manufacturers globally. In the early 1990s, the company introduced modern low-voltage power circuit breakers, rendering traditional “iron frame breakers” obsolete. IEM brought its expertise to power quality and power factor correction equipment in 1997 and has since developed unique low- and medium-voltage switchgear systems, ideally suited to industries with increased power and compact footprint requirements.

Today, IEM has expanded beyond Silicon Valley, boasting over a million square feet of manufacturing and service capacity to supply specialized electrical equipment across the U.S. and Canada. At IEM, tradition and technology continue to drive innovation. Products like state-of-the-art paralleling switchgear systems and fully front-accessible arc-resistant switchgear reflect this commitment. Responsiveness, engineering, and quality remain the keys to maintaining a loyal base of satisfied customers. With an unmatched knowledge base and experienced staff, IEM is dedicated to serving its customers’ needs and upholding its reputation as an innovator in the electrical distribution industry.
